Aiken is a community built on tradition and neighborly support. From the quiet beauty of the South Boundary oaks to the bustling energy of The Alley downtown, we know that our city is at its best when we look out for one another. However, many of our neighbors are struggling in silence with low literacy.
At Turning Pages Aiken, we are looking for volunteers who want to invest their time in the people who make this city great. Whether you are a retiree from the Savannah River Site, a professional working near University Parkway, or a resident in Woodside, your skills can change a life.
How You Can Help
You don’t have to be a teacher to make a difference. We have a role for every schedule and skill set:
- Be a Reading Tutor: Work one-on-one with an adult learner at the Aiken County Public Library. Help them gain the skills to read their first book, navigate a safety manual at the “Site,” or read a bedtime story to their grandkids. We provide the Curriculum Kits and all supplies so there is no guesswork.
- Join the Pair Care Call Team: Prefer to volunteer from home? Join our remote team! You’ll make encouraging check-in calls to our tutor-learner pairs to ensure they have everything they need to succeed.
- Event Ambassadors: Help us man the Literacy SC booth at local favorites like the Aiken County Farmers Market, Aiken’s Makin’, or polo matches. You’ll be the friendly face that introduces our mission to the community.
- Flyer & Outreach Team: Help us spread the word! We need volunteers to pass out flyers in local hubs like Crosland Park, downtown coffee shops, or community centers so those who need help know where to find us.
- Business Connectors: Do you have ties to Aiken’s business community? Help us “open the door” by introducing Literacy SC and the Turning Pages Aiken Branch to local employers who want to improve the literacy and safety of their workforce.
Investing in Aiken’s Future
When you volunteer with us, you invest in the local economy and the future of Aiken County. Every adult who improves their literacy is one step closer to a better job and a more stable life.
