The True Cost of Adult Illiteracy in South Carolina

Not being able to read well costs more than many realize. At Literacy SC, we see how it affects adults, families, and entire communities.

What is the cost of adult illiteracy?

Here are a few ways it impacts South Carolina:

Jobs and income. Adults who struggle to read often earn less. Many jobs require reading skills to fill out applications, follow instructions, and get promotions.

Health. Reading problems make it hard to read medicine labels, health forms, and care instructions, leading to mistakes or missed care.

Family. Parents who can’t read well may struggle to help children with homework or stay involved in school communication.

Confidence. Adults who can’t read well often feel shame, isolation, and fear of being judged, holding them back from opportunities.

Community and economy. Lower literacy affects the entire state, from workforce readiness to economic growth.

Why does Literacy SC focus on reading?

We believe anyone can move up and ahead through the power of reading. When adults read well, they:

Get better jobs Earn higher wages Live healthier lives Support their children’s learning Build confidence and independence
