How Our Free Adult Reading Tutoring Works in South Carolina

Reading is hard for many adults.

At Literacy SC, our Turning Pages program offers free, private reading tutoring for adults who want to read better for daily life, work, and family.

Who is this program for?

If you are:

  • An English-fluent adult (18+) who struggles to read words, sentences, or books
  • Someone who wants to read signs, forms, Bible passages, or notes with confidence
  • Ready to improve but unsure where to start

…then Turning Pages is for you.

What does it teach?

You will learn:

  • How to sound out words using phonics
  • Spelling and writing skills
  • How to read sentences smoothly
  • Confidence to read in everyday life

How does it work?

Here is what happens:

  1. Call or email us.
We ask a few simple questions to get to know your goals.
  2. Come in for an enrollment appointment.
We do a short reading check to see where you are starting.
  3. Get matched with a tutor.
You will meet once a week, for about an hour, at a public place like a library.
  4. Learn at your own pace.
Your tutor will use a proven phonics program, step by step.

Why is it free?

Our program is free thanks to donations, grants, and volunteers who care about helping adults read better. We do not receive government funding for Turning Pages, so donations and volunteers keep it going.
