Ruby Haydock DeLoach developed a love of nature growing up in a history book on Blackstock Road in Union County where stories of the Revolutionary War and the Battle of Blackstock were often told.
Tales of Old Bloody Bill Cunningham could conjure up nightmires. She, her sister and cousins enjoyed walks along old Indian trails, through woodlands and open fields discovering wild flowers and observing landscapes with waves of wheat blowing in the wind, making grasshoppers spit their tobacco, whistling bobwhite bird calls, and viewing the smoky blue mountains horizon sunrises and sunsets at the Appalachian Foothills.
Passionate feelings direct her brush in oil, watercolor and acrylic mediums. After 40 years as an educator, Ruby retired, cleaned out her attic, hired a contractor to add a dormer and created an art studio where she has written and illustrated two children’s books: Earth Turns on Its Axis and Growing Little Green Thumbs (SC Book Festival Selection).
Appalachian Mornings, her third book is a novella for readers. Playing in the Dirt is her latest release. The G.R.O.W! theme of Great Readings Open Worlds echoes through all her environmental nonfiction science books. She continually adds to her Wild Things and Lucky In Love series.
In 2015 designing lamps became an artful persuit. If you’re in need of a unique gift such as a lamp reimagined by Ruby, a children’s book, or a piece of art for your home, email her at [email protected]. You can also make an appointment to stop by and meet Ruby in person. She is very excited to be one of 20 authors who support literacy at the Lexington County Library December 10, 2022.
