For years, Ronnie* hid his struggle with reading. He made excuses when coworkers asked for help filling out forms. He avoided reading menus out loud, skipped over prescription labels, and let mail pile up unopened. He assumed the problem was focus—or maybe just a bad memory. It never occurred to him that what he needed was reading help.
Ronnie is not alone.
Across South Carolina, nearly 800,000 adults—that’s more than one in three—read below an 8th grade level. Many read below a 3rd grade level. It’s a silent struggle that often carries stigma, shame, and fear. But here’s the truth: it’s never too late to learn.
“Am I the only one?”
No. And it’s not your fault.
Many adults who struggle with reading were never given the right support in school. Some moved frequently. Others had undiagnosed learning challenges. Some faced family trauma. Whatever the reason, the result is the same: reading feels like something other people do. And it can feel humiliating to admit out loud.
But at Literacy SC, we’ve seen what happens when that silence is broken.
From Hiding to Thriving
When Ronnie enrolled in Literacy SC’s Turning Pages Adult Reading program, he was nervous. He didn’t want to look foolish. But what he found instead was a tutor who listened, a plan that made sense, and progress he could see.
“I’ve read three big books this year,” Ronnie says now, grinning. “Three! I’m actually reading. I’ve never done that before.”
Ronnie’s journey isn’t rare. It’s happening every day—in Richland County, in Lexington, in Aiken. And it starts with a simple step: reaching out.
