COLUMBIA SC – Mr. Jerry Bellune, popular journalist and founder of The Lexington County Chronicle newspaper, has donated $1,400 worth of new leadership books to Turning Pages SC, the oldest adult literacy council in South Carolina.
Turning Pages SC teaches adults to read through personalized, one-on-one tutoring that is free of cost. Their programs give adults around the Midlands tools to improve their reading skills.
The books include Lead People, Manage Things which offers 18 proven strategies on inspiring others to greater life achievement. “Our nonprofit thrives on community gifts. We are so grateful for Jerry’s ongoing generosity,” said Ms. Lisa Cole, the nonprofit’s Interim Executive Director. “Volunteers come to us for professional development in tutoring. This donation will help us provide more accessible education.”
Bellune is a long-time supporter of Turning Pages SC. He served on their Board of Directors in the past and now organizes their annual Authors for Literacy fundraiser. “Tutoring is an advanced form of leadership,” said Bellune. “I have seen the work they do. Tutors deserve our recognition and appreciation. These books will help tutors inspire their learners even more.”
Originally founded as the Greater Columbia Literacy Council, Turning Pages SC has helped South Carolinians read better for 54 years. The next Tutor Workshop will be held at their North Beltline office on March 11 from 9 am to 12 pm.
